About strip tillage
Strip tillage is what JMJS is built around. Rather than working a whole paddock, we cultivate only the narrow band the seed goes into, leaving the ground between the rows intact. That band gets warmed, aerated and loosened while the rest of the paddock keeps its structure, its trash cover and its moisture.
For fodder beet in particular this makes a real difference. Beet wants a warm, fine, well-drained seedbed and very accurate seed placement, but it also goes in at a time of year when full cultivation can blow away whatever moisture the nor'wester has not already taken. Strip till gives the seed the conditions it needs without exposing the whole block.

Only the planting band is opened up, so the rest of the paddock holds its moisture when the nor'wester arrives.
Fertiliser the seed can reach
Nutrient goes into the worked strip near the seed rather than being spread across ground the young plant never gets to.
Fewer passes, less compaction
Cultivating, fertilising and planting on one pass means less traffic over the paddock and a shorter weather window needed.
How we do it
The Falc strip till runs ahead of a Monosem precision planter on the one pass, with a Kuhn TF1500 metering fertiliser into the strip as it is cut. Fert goes in worked through the strip rather than sitting on top, seed goes in the right way up at a consistent depth, and slug bait goes on last. On contoured country the setup follows the ground rather than bridging across it.
