Albury

Albury sits at the top of our run, where the Canterbury plains start folding up into the Mackenzie foothills. It is the closest country to home, which usually means the shortest notice we can work with and the easiest paddocks to reach when a weather window opens unexpectedly. The mix of dryland blocks and irrigated flats through here means one farm can want a full strip till job while its neighbour is after a straight direct drill.

Fairlie

Fairlie and the surrounding Mackenzie country run colder and later than the coastal blocks, which shortens the planting window at both ends. Fodder beet and swedes matter here because so much of the district is set up for wintering, and getting the crop in on time is the difference between having enough feed and buying it in. We are regulars at the Fairlie show, so plenty of the work through here starts as a conversation over a fence rather than a phone call.

Pleasant Point

The downs around Pleasant Point are contoured country, and that shapes which gear suits. Both the strip till setup and the direct drill are chosen partly for how they follow ground rather than bridging across it, which matters a great deal when a paddock rolls away from you. There is a solid mix of dairy support and cropping through this district, so beet, brassicas and pasture renewal all come up in roughly equal measure.

Timaru

Closer to Timaru the country flattens out and the soils get heavier, which brings its own considerations. Compaction shows up faster on this ground, so subsoiling and ripping work come up more often around here than they do further inland. It is also arable country, which is where the combine earns its keep through late summer on cereal and seed crops.

Waimate

Waimate marks the southern end of the run, and it is worth booking a little further ahead from down this way simply because of travel. There is a lot of dairy support country through the district, so fodder beet planting is the bulk of what we do here, along with tow and fert work on the grazing blocks. If you are further south again, ring anyway and we will tell you honestly whether we can get to you.

Geraldine

Geraldine and the country running back toward the foothills is a genuine mix, rolling downs alongside flatter arable blocks, often on the same farm. That variety is why the gear list covers strip till, drilling, ripping and harvest rather than specialising in only one. Pasture renewal comes up a lot through here, and it is good country for trialling the clover renovator where a full paddock renewal is not justified.
